MARY MANOY

February 18, 1942 — May 19, 2018

Mary Margret Manoy was born to Robert and Gracie Lee Smith on February 18, 1942 in Dallas, Texas. She grew up in North Dallas, in Elm Thicket, along with her siblings of five sisters and one brother. She was married once and divorced before marrying Johnny Charles Manoy, a union that lasted for 49 years. Mary had a total of six children, five boys and one girl. She was a housewife who was creative at plastering, painting, sewing, cooking, and baking pastries. Mary found her true passion and calling when she attended and graduated Velma B’s Beauty Academy. She put hair in place, grew it where it was non-existent, and won countless trophies and awards because of it! She represented the City of Dallas as Ms. Cosmetology, while working at the Pink Palace in the early ‘70s. Mary later opened her own beauty shop in Hutchins, Texas, and a thrift shop in Oak Cliff before retiring and succumbing to health problems in the early 2000s.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Gracie Smith; her husband, Johnny Charles Manoy; one son, Dorwin Griffin; one grandson, Thor Hasle; one granddaughter, Destiney Hasle; and three sisters, Barbara A. Mathis, Mittie I. Smith, and Darlene Smith.

She leaves to celebrate and carry on her life’s memories: two sisters, Jennetter Gibson and Glendora Smith; one brother, Roy Lee Smith; four sons, Winfred Griffen, Rodney Griffen, Juan Griffen, and Trenton Griffen; one daughter, Duana Griffen; three nephews, Robert Smith, Courtney Smith, and Timothy Smith; four nieces, Tiffany Smith, Gracie Smith, Adrian McDuff, and Tosca Manoy; three daughters-in-law, Serina Griffen, Iola Griffen, and Kenya Griffen; eight grandsons; eight granddaughters; one great-grandchild; and a host of other family and friends.
