Resia Mary was born March 3, 1928, to Wilmor and Maggie McCann in Preston, Louisiana. She moved to Shreveport over 70 years ago and united with Washington Temple Christian Methodist Episcopal Church, where she remained a faithful member until her health began to fail. Resia Mary served faithfully on the Washington Temple Stewardess Board and as Chaplain for the Shreveport District. When the Louisiana Region Stewardess Board met, she was always available to take her post. She also served faithfully on the Benevolent Committee, in the Mission Department, as Secretary for the Lay Department, and was an Assistant Sunday School Teacher. Although she worked three Sundays out of the month, attending Sunday School and Bible Study strengthened her faith to keep God’s word in her heart. Resia Mary purchased and donated two flags with poles to Washington Temple C.M.E. Church. The American flag and the Christian flag both stand in the sanctuary today.
In the early 40’s, a young, handsome soldier named Warren Garfield Harden King caught her eyes, and they were united in marriage in 1946. One child – a beautiful, loving and caring daughter blessed this union. They named her Minnie Jean.
Resia Mary enjoyed a long-lasting career at the Shreveport Country Club. However, she did not hesitate to take a sabbatical leave from work in 1985 to care for her ailing mother in Mineola, Texas. Upon returning to Shreveport one year later, retirement was not an option. Resia Mary made one phone call and was instantly hired at East Ridge Country Club. She remained a faithful employee for 25 years.
Resia Mary leaves a legacy of love, humor, golf, baseball, and sewing, as well as a spirit to help and serve others. These beautiful memories will never be forgotten by the family that she so dearly loved. Her favorite expressions – “Case Closed!” or “Book Never Been Open!” – shall long be remembered as well. We all understood without a doubt what it meant – that was the end of a discussion or the conversation was over.
Her immediate family: Minnie, Robert, Regina, Cassandra (Roderick), Danielle and Gabrielle, made frequent trips to Shreveport, and would also take her home with them to Fort Worth to visit with and enjoy. On her last visit to Fort Worth for the Thanksgiving holidays, the acuity of her loving daughter sensed the need to keep her with them. Thus, her new home (often with a little persuasion) was established. Thereby, Resia Mary King departed this earthly life on June 9, 2018, with loved ones by her side. She was preceded in death by her parents – Wilmor and Maggie McCann, husband – Warren G.H. King, four brothers and two sisters.
Cherishing the gift of her life are: her daughter, Minnie Jean (Robert) Gunter of Forth Worth, TX; two granddaughters, Cassandra (Roderick) Miles and Regina Gunter; two great-granddaughters, Danielle and Gabrielle Miles of Fort Worth, TX; one sister, Katie James of Oklahoma City, OK; three brothers, Lovorn (Evelyn) McCann of Mineola, TX, Edward James McCann of Tyler, TX, and Roy Alvin McCann of Shreveport, LA; one sister-in-law, Lena Faye McCann of Mineola, TX; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
