ALBERT SMITH

March 20, 1953 — October 14, 2021

Albert Smith, affectionately known as Al, went to be with The Lord on Thursday Oct. 14, 2021.  He entered this world on March 20, 1953 in Lafayette, LA. as the 8th child of the late Mary Henry and Jessie Smith Sr.  Al attended George Washington Carver H.S. in Lake Charles, LA.  He later moved to Texas and shortly answered his call to serve in the United States Army from 1970 to 1973.

After Al completed his military duty, he relocated to Detroit, MI. where he was employed as a computer systems technician.  He later transferred to Southwestern Bell in Midland, TX. Al met and married Yulonda Fisher, the love of his life for over 30 years ago.  Together in love, the couple shared 6 children, Tameka Smith (Deceased), Shiedah Smith, Alkynte Smith, Tierra (Quentin) Wright, Allen Michael Smith, Sydnee S. Smith.

Al and Yulonda relocated to Desoto, TX, in the Dallas area, in 1994.  After the move to the Dallas area, Al became involved with the sport of boxing.  He traveled all over the world as a trainer, manager and mentored many young men.  One of Al’s greatest accomplishments was being elected the first African American boxing commissioner for the state of Texas.

Upon retirement from AT&T in 2008, Al was employed by Texas Elections Commission for a few years, where he provided computer technical support for election officials and staff.  One of the highlights of his technical support was when he provided support during the 2008 Presidential election of Barack Obama.

The simplest pleasures in life brought Al great joy. His hobbies included fishing, hunting, gardening, and raising chickens.  Because of Al's love of farming, he mastered the farming technique called Hydroponics, where he learned and taught others how to grow healthier vegetables. Al also partnered with the city of Dallas to supply his vegetables and eggs to a local food bank that fed the neighborhood's poor.

Al’s personality was contagious to everyone who encountered him.  He was a great friend to many and a stranger to none.

Al was called home to join his parents, daughter and two of his siblings, Shirley Jones and Davis Smith Sr. He leaves to cherish his memory his wife and children, his siblings Helen Smith, Jesse Smith Jr, Rose Lee (Alex) Domingeaux, Mary Ann (Ray) Kendricks, and Judith (Charlie) Downing, God-brother Dr. Fred C. Thomas and his in-laws Tim, Candi, Annette, and Sherry. He also leaves his grandchildren; Jazzmin Smith, Jai Pitts, Chynah Pitts, Amaya Wright, Allen Michael Jr, Aniya Smith, Austin Smith, Victoria Wright, and Great-granddaughter N’Diaye Pitts. The family also acknowledges special friends, Asbery Holt, Wanza King, Garland Hampton, Kelly Sokolowski, Lloyd Norwood and Terry Williams.  He will be missed and forever loved.
