Alton Smith Sr. departed from this earthly life on July 21, 2025, in Dallas, Texas. Son of the late Will (Big Will) Smith and Sadie Mitchell, he was born on a Sunday on the day of April 26, 1936, in Smithland, TX, where he also received his education under the Smithland School District.
Alton Smith was a hard worker and provider for his family. His career began at the Nation Brothers Packing House Trucking Company in Springhill, Louisiana. He expanded his experience and became an employee for Mitchell’s Trucking Company in Dallas, Texas. Sometime later, he joined the City of Dallas, where he was employed for over thirty years until he retired in the 1980s.
He met and married Helen E. McDaniel in 1957 while in Springhill, Louisiana, and to this union, six children were born. In 1965, he relocated his family to Dallas, TX, where he could better provide for them. He later married Helen Jean until death departed them in 2013.
Alton dedicated his life to the Lord and accepted Jesus as his savior and the forgiveness of his sins. Before his health declined and affected his ability to be present, he was a dedicated and active member of the Bethel Temple Pentecostal Church.
Alton Smith prided himself on being a man of his word, and maintaining a respected level of integrity was important to him. Anyone who knew him could testify that he was not a man of many words, but when he did speak, he would leave a lasting impression. He was dedicate to pouring into his kids and family with the truth about life and kept to the scriptural verse Proverbs 22:6 “Train up a child in the way they should go and when they are old they will not depart from it” and by the grace of God they succeeded, none were caught up in the world and all have dedicated theirs lives to the Lord and remain faithful. Family meant everything to him, and as he was preparing to transition home, he spoke of his love for everyone and his desire that we would carry on that torch to love each other!
Alton Smith Sr.'s last words would be of encouragement, don’t worry, God is never blind to your tears, never deaf to your prayers, and never silent to your pain. He Sees, He Hears & He Will Deliver.
Alton Smith Sr. was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Helen Jean, daughter Marqurita Petty, two grandchildren, “Baby” Helen Petty & Brent Grant, nine brothers & seven sisters. He leaves to cherish his memory six children: Ray (Eve) of Springhill, Louisiana, Fred (Paula), Annette, Alton Jr. (Willette), Linda (Freeman (deceased), Bruce (Marleen), all of Dallas, Texas; 14 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, and 10 great-great-grandchildren.
