BENJAMIN SCOTT

October 8, 1927 — November 13, 2020

Rev. Benjamin Scott was born in Hatchechubbee, Alabama on October 8, 1927 to the parentage of Levi and Lizzie (Stewart) Scott. He was an intelligent and inquisitive child who loved building things and music.  He loved harmonizing and had a passion for acapella music. His love of music led him to join a quartet where he enjoyed performing with the brotherhood of his group.  He loved music so well until he even taught himself how to play the piano.  He had a love of travel and in his younger years traveled all over the United States and even to some foreign countries.

His travels eventually led him to Dallas, Texas where he met and married Tessie (Sanders) Scott and together they raised four daughters; Angela Mitchell (David), Veronica Putilla (preceded in death) (son-in-law Willie), Jannette Washington (Michael), Juanita Scott-Nichols (son-in-law Ken preceded in death) and one honorary daughter/niece, Wendy Love and one God-daughter, Valarie Randle. He is also survived by another daughter, Cheryl Walker and son, Aubrey Scott (Brenda) along with two other children who preceded him in death, Linda Gail Mathis, and Harvey Leonard Scott from a previous marriage to Daisy Belle Johnson.

He was a God-fearing man who taught his children to do the same.  He was an ordained minister and had a lifelong affiliation with the Church of God In Christ ministry where he spent the majority of his life, teaching, preaching and sharing the gospel of Christ. His love of building things motivated him to design and build his own home from the ground up which he dwelled in until his passing. He always credited his father, Levi Scott for teaching him the basic skills of carpentry and his stepfather, Dennis Mercer for teaching him the advanced skills of carpentry as well. He spent many years mastering and honing his craft by teaching himself electrical, plumbing, and other building skills. He then used this knowledge to start his career in the construction industry. His craftsmanship, professionalism, punctuality, and extreme dependability eventually earned him a promotion to Business Manager of the (AFL-CIO) American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations Union in Dallas, Texas.  He loved this position and held it until his retirement. He was a member of the Laborers International Union of North America Local #648 and was also a member of the Freemasons Organization.

He was known to be a loving husband, father, and grandfather. He leaves behind to cherish his memory an entire host of family and friends who will miss him dearly.
