First Lady Ida “Marie” Tyler, was born in Dallas, Texas on April 23, 1936, as the only daughter of proud parents Roy M. Hathaway and Maraneula Prince-Hathaway, who both left this earth too soon. The Hathaway’s also had four older sons who are deceased.
Marie lived in the Dallas area and attended North Dallas High School. At the age of twelve, Marie and her father went to the local Baptist church where they both accepted Jesus Christ and received baptism. Marie lived her younger life full of generosity and warmth with her daughter Joy Lynn Pierce who is also deceased.
In 1974, Marie met and married her love of almost fifty years. He is the man we know today as Pastor Wayne Tyler. Although no children were born of this union they affectionately loved a host of children. They touched the lives of children from their former church home of twenty years and their membership of parishioners at present day. Both are fondly known as mother, father, “mema” and “pepa”.
Marie’s interests were as varied and vibrant as her personality. After going into full retirement at 65 years, she enjoyed being a housewife. She found joy in baking sweets and creating delectable treats that brought smiles to the faces of friends and family. The time spent on various adventures with her best friend Bertie, added extra comfort and joy to her life. Her love for exploration led her to travel while embracing diverse cultures. Most notably, she had an uncanny ability to remember the special days of those around her. She thoughtfully showed care in every phone call, card sent or gesture of kindness. Her down-to earth spirit was a testament to the beauty of human connection and the power of empathy.
On June 8, 2024, Marie heard the calling of the Lord and returned home at 4:11 p.m. in her home. She is survived by her loving family - husband, of 49 years Pastor Wayne Tyler, brother-in-laws, Jesse J. Tyler of Chicago, Illinois, Herman Tyler of Marion Illinois, Hubert E. Tyler of Kansas City, Missouri, Curtis Deal of Shreveport, Louisiana ; sister-in-laws, Erma J. Smith of Dallas, Texas, Bobby Tyler of Shreveport, Louisiana, Dorothy Pankey of Michigan City, Indiana and Jewel Tyler of Dallas, Texas. In addition to, nephews, nieces, church members and a host of friends.
As we bid farewell to Marie, may we carry forward her legacy of compassion and thoughtfulness in our own lives. Rest in peace, dear one; your memory will forever be etched in our hearts.
