JAMES CURTIS PARNELL

January 9, 1951 — June 10, 2025

James Curtis Parnell, a vibrant soul whose kindness and compassion touched the lives of many, passed away on June 10, 2025, in Mesquite, Texas, leaving behind a legacy of love and laughter. Born on January 9, 1951, in Dallas, Texas, James was a proud product of Dallas ISD, where his humorous spirit began to shine brightly.

For thirty remarkable years, James dedicated his career to the water department of the City of Dallas, a tenure that culminated in a well-deserved retirement, marking a proud accomplishment in his life. He was more than just an employee; he was a fixture in the community, known for his warm smile and infectious laughter that could brighten even the dullest of days.

James was a man of style and flair, never seen without his signature ensemble: a crisp shirt, a matching hat, and, inevitably, a face towel draped over his shoulder. On weekends, you could find him in his hometown of South Dallas where he was known as 220 6'1 from Bonton, engaging in joyful camaraderie with friends while washing his car, each moment spent clad in the confidence that only an exceptional character like him could exude.

His family fondly recalls the playful admonitions of “Put that finger down,” a phrase that epitomized his charismatic, larger-than-life persona. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, James cherished every moment spent with family. His children—Timothy Hampton, James Parnell, Tyrone Parnell, and Tamela McGee—will carry forward the many lessons learned from their father, as will his loving wife, Peggy Parnell, who stood by him through thick and thin.

A master of the grill, James's culinary prowess was legendary among friends and family. His joy in cooking brought everyone together, forging connections over mouthwatering barbecues and creating memories that will be cherished forever. His laughter was not only heard but felt; a testament to his incredible ability to weave joy into the fabric of family gatherings and friendships.

He is survived by his wife, Peggy Parnell; his children, Timothy Hampton, James Parnell, Tyrone Parnell, and Tamela McGee; his son-in-law, John McGee; his sister, Carolyn Wade; seventeen grandchildren; a host of great-grandchildren; along with special nieces and nephews, Eric Wade, Daric Wade, Darrin Wade, Reginald Wade, Gwennette Wade Clay, Steve Brown, Sherry Wade and Kim Brown. Each of them will miss him dearly, feeling the void left by a beloved uncle and an adored family patriarch.

Though he has departed this earthly realm, James’s spirit remains alive in the hearts of all who had the privilege to know him. He was preceded in death by his father, James Board; mother, Catherine Wade; and siblings, John Alvin Wade, Billy Ray Parnell, Mary Jones, Betty Winn, Jean Cooper, Faye Wilson, and Delores Wade Ellis. Their memories, alongside his, create a tapestry of love that will never fade.

Services in honor of James Curtis Parnell will be held at Golden Gate Funeral Home in Dallas. A viewing is scheduled for June 19, 2025, from 11 AM to 7 PM, followed by a funeral service on June 20, 2025, at 11 AM.
