Mary Louise Bates was born on September 3, 1926 to the parents of Louise Bowser-Evans and Jimmie Ned Evans. Mary was the 2nd child and the 2nd oldest daughter of eight Evans family offspring in Alvarado, Texas.
Mary was a member of Saint Paul Baptist Church in Alvarado, Texas. She received her formal education in the Alvarado Public School System and was a graduate of George Washington Carver High School. After graduating high school, she met and married Robert Bates, Sr. on November 15, 1946.
Alongside her devoted husband, Mary poured her heart and steady hands into supporting The Bates Hay Bailing business, managing family real estate, and running their beloved café in Alvarado—a warm, familiar place where neighbors gathered, stories were shared, and everyone felt at home. Her dedication and quiet excellence made their businesses and the café a cherished part of the community’s daily rhythm.
Beyond the café and her other family-owned businesses, Mary worked diligently for many years as a domestic worker, serving local families with care, precision, and pride. All the while, she nurtured and raised her eight children, weaving love, discipline, and devotion into the fabric of their lives. Her days were full, her spirit humble, and her heart always centered on family and community.
As a community leader, entrepreneur, wife, mother, and grandmother, Mary lived her values with quiet strength and steady grace. She didn’t just speak about love and responsibility—she embodied them. Her compassion was grounded in action, her kindness measured by the care she gave to others every single day.
Whether she was tending her garden or guiding her family, Mary approached everything with patience, precision, and purpose. She believed that every person has a role to play in helping both family and community flourish—and that when each of us “do our part”, everyone benefits.
