ROY BUFORD

Roy Nolan Buford, at the age of 71, passed away peacefully in his sleep at his home, on Friday, April 23, 2021, around 2:30 p.m. He fought a good fight, he finished his race, he kept the faith; and now has been received unto his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, in His Heavenly Kingdom. (2 Timothy 4: 6 – 7). Now, let the church rejoice and say, Amen!

Roy Buford was born, September 2, 1949, in Austin, TX, to the parents of Autry Lee and Geraldine Buford.  He was the second oldest of six children as the Buford family began its journey in the old Clarksville Community in West Austin.  Having been raised in a Christian home, Roy professed a faith in Jesus Christ and was baptized at an early age at Sweet Home Missionary Baptist Church.  Roy’s Christian experience had its foundation in the Clarksville Community because of his grandparents; Mr. Richard Bolden, Sr., who was a deacon of the church; and Mrs. Gertrude Bolden, who was the church musician and BTU/VBS Co- Coordinator.  They both kept Roy and his siblings actively engaged in weekly church activities.  After moving to Dallas, the family first joined The Good Street Baptist Church and later, united with Bethany Baptist Church, where Roy was involved in both churches Boy Scouts’ Programs. Roy’s membership continued at the Bethany Baptist Church until his death.

After the family moved to Dallas, the family eventually settled down in the North Park community.  Roy graduated from the old Booker T. Washington High School in 1968. While there, Roy excelled in both football, basketball, and track.  But it was his talent in track where he set state records in the low hurdles and was ranked 3rd in the nation for the low hurdles.  This resulted in a track scholarship to Texas Southern University. Roy left the university early because he wanted to pursue his dream to play in the NFL for the Dallas Cowboys. After several attempts to make the Dallas Cowboys team, Roy made it as a free agent; but due to an injury before the season started, his football career was abruptly ended. Several years later, Roy’s desire to play football manifested in playing Dallas City League Flag Football for the “Dirty Dozen” and “The Predators” where he started as a wide receiver and a cornerback.  His teams won state titles.

Roy was first married to Eunice Morgan of Dallas, TX. To this union, Randy, his first-born son was born. Roy’s second marriage was to Cindy Watson, also of Dallas, TX.  To this union, three beautiful daughters were born: Shannon, Kristan, and Nikeesha. Though the marriage ended, Roy and Cindy were married for over 30 years and they remained friends until his death.

Roy’s work career began after failing to continue his dream to play for the Dallas Cowboys due to injury.  He started working for the Haggar Slacks’ Co. and later did a brief stint at the Presbyterian Hospital in Dallas.  After that, Roy worked with his father’s limousine service before securing a job at American Airlines at Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport.  Roy faithfully served the company for 43 years until his retirement.

Some of Roy’s favorite things included football, boxing, and basketball. Roy continued the tradition of the Buford males for his love for watching westerns and action movies.  He also was a fan of the Marvel Universe. His love for the Dallas Cowboys made him a life-long fan!  He enjoyed traveling, especially going on cruises to the islands. His special places were Antigua, the Cayman Islands, St. Kitt, and Jamaica.  And “Swing Dancing,” whether, it was just for fun or competition, was high on Roy’s list for recreation and fun.  He enjoyed being the “dapper dresser” during these special occasions. He was noted for being friend to many and a great listener.

Roy was preceded in death by is parents, Autry Lee and Geraldine Buford.  He is survived by his son, Randy Harrison, (Lisa Harrison); his daughters: Shannon Webb, (Aaron Webb); Kristan McGee, (Demetrius McGee); and Nikeesha Buford.  His grandchildren: Joey, Jordan, Jacob, Randi, Kennedy, Riley, Morgan, and Paisley. His great-grandchildren: Harper, Myles, and Calvin.  His siblings:  Larry, Michael, (Mable Buford); Sharon-Buford Roland, (Herbert Roland); Carolyn-Buford Johnson, (Paul Johnson); and Gregory. Also, he leaves a host of nephews, nieces, aunts, cousins, and friends.  Roy Nolan Buford will always be remembered as a man who loved and enjoyed the life and family God blessed him with.
