GERTIE SMITH

Gertie Mae (Charles) Smith, age 79, passed away peacefully on July 28, 2020 at her home in Desoto, TX. Gertie was born October 8, 1940 in New Orleans, Louisiana to the parents of late William Charles Jr. and the late Harriet (Charles) Paul. She was a graduate of McDonough 35, and went on to attend Dillard University.

Gertie spent 53 years in her career as a devoted Nurse. She lived her life to the fullest enjoying time with her children, grandchildren and her Mardi Gras Crews.

Gertie is survived by her brother William Joseph Charles; sister Lois Scott, sister, Althea Green, brother Michael Charles, sister Pamela Charles, brother Kenneth Charles, sister Linda Fontenot; daughter Leslie Saulny, daughter Judith Jenkins, daughter Selina Smith, son Ernest Perkins III, daughter, Curry Pierce, daughter, Kally Pierce; sixteen grandchildren; six great grandchildren. Gertie is also preceded in death by her grandmother Julia Gail Robinson, grandfather Willie Robinson,  son Lester John Smith III, daughter Sunny Gail Smith, stepmother Ophelia Charles.
