Maron Andrew Pettes, Sr. was born in Las Cruces, NM on December 7, 1948 to Charley B. Pettes, Sr., and Leola Nelson Pettes. On Friday, October 16, 2020, Maron Andrew Pettes, Sr., 71, of Desoto, TX passed away peacefully with family by his side.

During his teenage years he gave his life to Christ at the Second Baptist Church of Las Cruces, NM. He attended Washington Elementary, Alameda Junior High and Las Cruces High School. As a young boy, he loved to sing and later joined the Gospel Men’s Quartet as a lead tenor. He enjoyed playing all sports, but he excelled in track and field and basketball. Maron Andrew Pettes, Sr. received a full athletic scholarship to New Mexico Junior College and the University of Oklahoma. He ran track and field for the Sooners and was an All-American decathlete and ranked 5 th in the 1972 U.S. Olympic trials in Eugene, Oregon. He graduated from the University of Oklahoma with a Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education, minor in Psychology and was a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity. He had a successful career playing with the University of Oklahoma basketball team and was drafted by the Chicago Bulls. After college, he served five years in the United States Army and received an Honorable Discharge.

He began his teaching and coaching career in Chickasha, OK and served as a devout educator for 30 years before his retirement in 2017. A voracious reader and history aficionado, Andrew enjoyed sharing his knowledge with others.

He is preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Josephine, and Debbie; brother, Michael.

Andrew is survived by his siblings Charley B. Pettes, Jr. (Skeeter), Harley Pettes, Eugene Pettes, Alfred Pettes, James Pettes, Ora Jackson and Diane Pettes; and his children, grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
