NORMA WASHINGTON

December 3, 1937 — April 23, 2022

Norma (Vernette) Kay Washington entered Heaven’s gates on April 23, 2022 at 84 years of age. She was born on December 3, 1937 in Ennis, TX to Jeannette Radway and Vernon Knight. At an early age, she accepted Christ at Galilee Missionary Baptist Church in Ennis, TX and served faithfully in many capacities.  She was a dedicated leader to the following committees: Mission, Pastor’s Aide, Usher Board, and Hospitality.

Norma was affectionately known as Baby, Dimpy, Mother, Granny, Tuta, and Sis. Washington. She met the love of her life, Booker T. Washington while attending church at Galilee Missionary Baptist Church. Booker would watch her walking to and from church and he just knew he wanted to marry her. The two wed on November 3, 1956 and stayed married for over 65 years.

She proudly served as a Medication Aid at Odd Fellows and Rebekah Retirement Center. She later went on to work and retire from both Ennis Regional Hospital and Ennis Independent School District.

The simplest pleasures in life brought great joy to Dimpy. Anything she put her mind to, she would achieve. At the age of 75 her goal was to become a “guitarist”. This dream was fulfilled when she mastered the bass guitar and started the band Reaching for Christ. Norma also loved spending time in the kitchen creating delicious meals for her family. Neighbors would love to gather around the home for meals and loved listening to her words of wisdom.

Sis. Washington’s battle with medical issues in recent years showed her courage in facing life’s challenges with a smile. Despite the pain, Norma came out a hero and stayed strong until the end. She is preceded in death by her parents, Vernon Knight and Jeanette Radway; her son, Warren Allen Washington; sister, Benette Triplett; and son-in-law, Charlie Littleton, Sr.

Mother’s memories will be cherished by her husband Booker T. Washington Sr., sons, Steven (Lynn), Booker T. Jr, (Shandra), daughters Rosalind Massey (Ray), Cheryl Littleton, Virginia, Jennifer Austin (Aaron), daughter in-law Portia Washington, brothers Billy Don Burton, Samuel Burton (Marilyn), special cousins James Conner and Sammie English. Granny also leaves to mourn 16 Grandchildren, 25 Great Grandchildren, 3 Great-Great Grandchildren and a host of Nieces, Nephews, Cousins, and other relatives and friends.
